Are the Gardaí trying to frighten citizens from protesting against G8 in the South?

Only a few weeks ago, we had a report in the Evening Herald, from an unknown Garda source, that riots were being planned in Dublin for the G8. For some strange reason, the Garda even "knew" that the riots were being planned in Seville Place - wherever that is! 400 riot police have been deployed to Dublin for the event - or so the Herald tells us.

800 gardai on alert over fears of G8 summit riots - Herald.ie

Today, citizens tried to put up posters for the Dublin Alternative G8 Summit. Permission had been sought from Dublin Corporation, and received. All insurances paid. And yet, those putting up the posters were followed and constantly harassed by groups of Gardaí, who told them that protesting against the G8 was "controversial."

I very much doubt that these Gardaí took it on themselves to follow a few people putting up posters and harassing them. Without a doubt the order has come from above. There are always protests against the G8. By now it is a tradition. Would it not be better if the state tried to facilitate these protests, workshops and seminars, rather than trying to use fear and intimidation to stop people attending them? They should know that Irish people will never allow their ability to act as involved citizens to be taken away.

There's certainly a tendency among the media to talk up the prospect of violence to make their stories more exciting, but I hope that people in Dublin will see that a lot of work has been done to provide serious forums for discussion about the world we now live in, and that they will not be intimidated from joining in the debate.

The Korean protesters just turn up with their own shields, it drives the cops mad, it is not an offensive weapon and if used correctly with strong trained men like the spartan phalanx it is devastating for this type of warfare.

Just saying like, I would probably be supporting the Garda side against the crusty's anyway.

Whats really worrying is that the "normal" person these days is supposed to be the person who has no interest in anything but shopping and Sky Movies. Anyone who takes an active interest in politics is to be regarded with suspicion and subjected to police attention.
