Bertie wins confidence motion by 5 votes

The confidence motion in An Taoiseach was won tonight by An Taoiseach by 81:76 - a total of 157 votes which means that 9 votes were missing in today's vote.

What normally happens where Government members cannot vote, is something called 'pairing' occurs, where specific opposition members agree with Gov supporters to jointly abstain, if one cannot be present for a specific reason.

We'll get the voting record and publish it here on Politics.ie in the morning.

How do you get that? A number of FF ministers were absent, and the procedure to deal with issues like that wasn't followed. That Bertie Ahern won it this well underlines the comfort margin in which this government operates.

More like a rock solid majority. FF+GP+PD+INDS all still on board.

Although not according to Pauric Gallagher on NewsTalk this evening, Factual. He claims that Bertie has nothing to worry about now that he has won this confidence vote! I expected more from NewsTalk. My personal opinion is that the Taoiseach's credibility is slowly ebbing away. Thought Gilmore was a good deal more impressive in the Dail today than Enda.

Actually the Bull doesnt get a vote on this Motion so 8 Deputies were missing, 7 of whom had to be Govt TDs. 5 months holidays and they still need more, crazy. OK so some of them are Ministers on Official business, but 7 of them, not a hope, unless the Presient or Taoiseach was on a state visit.

Very low margin and will emphasise for many that this is going to be an intersting Dail

Padraic (for that be his name) has merely spoken facts -another motion like this cannot be tabled for another six months. How is Bertie thus not safe?

You miss the point as well DC. Caesar should beware Brutus waiting in the wings, feigning loyalty for the present.

A vote of confidence will never displace him.
He will go when his party decide it is no longer to their advantage to keep him. That is why CJH and Reynolds resigned.
It could be tomorrow, next month, next year, four years time.
All we know for certain is that he is a lot less secure than he was before he did 18 hours up in the Castle.

That's my view as well. Ahern would have won this by at least 9 votes if it was held next week. How can anyone not call that a solid majority?
