No death threats made to Shell workers

The Irish Times reports today that deputies Cowley (Ind) and Ring (FG) of Mayo have disputed allegations that death threats were made against Shell workers. That paper also reports that Gardai got one report of a verbal threat during a row outside a pub several weeks ago. No mention was made of the IRA.
Given FG's hysterical reaction to the untrue allegations of "IRA threats," is this kind of ham-fisted handling going to lose FG one or two seats in Mayo? Will there be a knock-on effect on Labour, who have remained remarkably quiet during the Shell controversy?

    WHAT? REALLY?

Interesting point about the activities of other parties though. Labour have been AWOL for the duration. A statement from Tommy Broughan and a visit to the men in prison was it. Rabbitte was hassled by the families for refusing to meet with them some time ago during a picket outside Leinster House and I got unconfirmed reports from someone in Mayo last night that his name was booed at one of the marches down there. That said, there's suggestions he might be on the platform this Saturday so maybe Labour are trying to get back into it but they've basically not lifted a finger.

The Greens are another group that seem to have gone AWOL on this one. With the exception of the councillor in Galway who's playing a blinder by all accounts their people in Dublin and Cork haven't even bothered tieing into the local campaigns let alone doing anything. Again, the odd statement and so on. There's a Green Party member involved in the Dublin group but it's very much as an individual activist.

The Socialist Party as an organisation have done nothing and for some ill-defined reason are refusing to tie into the Dublin campaign group. Joe Higgins is very active of course, but the SP themselves haven't done anything bar a small attendance at the last Dublin demo. Efforts are underway to get them out for the Statoil Day of Action on Friday.

Well It was Sunday Independent Story. So it was rubbish. Anyone who actually believed it was true is stupid.

Good point about the Greens. I had completely forgotten about them.

If it were true, it might be. Local groups in Dublin and Cork have actually been organising rolling demonstrations over the last few weeks at Shell garages around their respective cities - unfortunately, we don't have SF's funds, personnel or profile so we just get ignored by the press and accused of doing nothing. Thanks for that.

Don't know, I wasn't involved in them. I have received e-mails and such detailing the picketing activities of some Green branches up there, and I recommend you contact your local branch and ask them.
