Revenue Commissioners cherishing us all equally

Ireland's taxation system is headed for a more user friendly future if the RTE website is accurate with this quote from An Taoiseach today:

The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, has told the Mahon Tribunal that he had 'enough to do' rather than keep an account of his income and expenditure in the 1990s.

People in business will relate to that.

We had been under the impression that if we eased up on our financial record keeping in order to spend more time actually working for our customers then the Revenue would not be pleased. Looks like we misjudged the Revenue completely. They really do understand us after all. Bertie just realised that sooner than most. Accountancy training pays. And if it works for the Taoiseach clearly it has to work for the rest of us. Doesn't it?

    Happy days.

I have dealt with Revenue a couple of times in the last two months and I have to say that I found the Revenue Commissioners to be an absolute pleasure. They actually shocked me with their helpfulness. I got a grand back in tax last week. It took them less than two weeks to sort it all out. Everytime I rang to check things (I was sorting out something else) I found their phone-in menu easy to use (God if only other companies had menus that easy) and when I spoke to someone they were incredibly helpful. One guy I spoke to suggested I also seek tax back on medical expenses as I had been in hospital and had a lot of medical bills, sent me a form, and included in it another form for something else. (I sent in a note to his boss commending him. Companies are used to getting letters complaining about a member of staff. When we come across someone who does an exceptionally good job it is worth saying thanks. Some companies give bonuses to staff who get praised by customers. That guy deserved a bonus if what I experienced was typical of how he deals with people.)

Years ago dealing with Revenue was a nightmare. They genuinely shocked me with how much they have improved. I only wish other companies, state and private, were as user-friendly.

    I agree.

I become self-employed this year and was pleasantly surprised how easy it it to manage your tax affairs.

Yes, have to praise the revenue for efficiency on this one. They sorted out my tax back so fast I thought I was dealing with a private company. : )

That was my experience. It was so different to what I used to experience; the bureaucracy, the waiting in line, the snotty-attitude of staff. The first time I rang Revenue this year at the end of the call I remember actually saying "oh my God". I was stunned by the efficiency, the politeness, even the phone-in menu which is the best I have ever experienced. We should hold them up as a model for efficient customer service. It is so easy to criticise companies (and there are some appalling companies, state and private) so it is worth saying a big 'well done' to a company that gets it so right.

    That's refreshing.

Did you give them the same explanation as An Taoiseach about being too busy to keep any acccounts and stuff or did they even want to know that much?

More people should know about this new enlightened approach to personal taxation. The Commissioners should rebrand themselves Revenue Lite. Or maybe MyRevenue.

I've been self-employed for the last dozen years, and while I've always found them pleasant and helpful, the last 6-7 years they've been really impressive.
