    Compensation for Crime Victims

    http://www.rte.ie/news/2005/0713/rape.html

The appeal court today signalled that a custodial sentence cannot be replaced by compensation in the case of rape. A long time ago on this site I raised this issue in relation to crimes of assault etc. I hope that the politicians recognise that the court's decision should now be extended beyond rape cases, themselves crimes of violence, so that thuggery can be tackled and the wealthy thug does not have the option of lashing out twice: once with the boot and then with the wallet to escape criminal conviction and /or imprisonment.

I think Rape is easy the most undersentenced Crime in Ireland.

The Judges are mostly upper class snobs who havn't a clue even if they cared anyway which they don't.

We need a complete overhaul of the Judical System with longer sentences for Rapists with maximum sentences served in full.

Personally IMO rapists deserve the Death penalty but I realise that will never happen.

Also no frills prisons. No TV No Pool, No mags, no radio, no visits to the cinema or driving lessons at taxpayers expense.

Do you really think someone should potentially face the death penalty on the basis of an unsubstantiated allegation of rape? There are way too many cases of crying wolf to justify that, surely.
None of which is meant to minimise the seriousness of rape as a crime. But it is singularly unsuited to the death penalty.

The unfortunate truth is that there have been cases of false accusations. However, a great deal of uncertainty could be removed if repeat offenders were considered for the bullet in the back of the head.

Physical castration at the very least should be considered in these cases.

Along with 20 years hard labour. In a quarry.

Do you think that will serve to rehabilitate criminals?

As in my books they could stay there forever that wouldn't be a problem!

How would you fund that proposal?

Well that's on reason why the DP would never be used.

I know being falsely accused of Rape would also be a gross injustice.

In reality though rapists could serve much longer for their crimes and that would be more than acceptable to the Public.
