President hosts unionists at Twelfth reception
    12/07/2005 - 18:39:25

Hundreds of unionists gathered at the President’s official residence today for a friendly reception to mark the historic occasion of the Battle of the Boyne.

As thousands of Orangemen took to the streets across Northern Ireland for the Battle of the Boyne commemoration parade, President Mary McAleese held a Twelfth of July garden party in Áras An Uachtaráin in glorious sunshine.

“This reception and the planned re-development of the site of the Battle of the Boyne are, I believe, positive signs of the spirit of inclusion and tolerance that characterise today’s confident, successful Ireland,” the President said at the seventh annual party to celebrate the occasion.

I imagine she has probably been doing this every year since she first did it in 1998, the time I lost all respect for her as a president. She of all people should see these people for what they are. At least it should be balanced, but she doesn't seem to do anything to commemorate our patriot dead. And still some people criticise her for being a 'shinner'. I heard nasty rumours that her candidacy had widespread support in SF, but I hope it's not true. She may be a perfectly nice person, but to me, she represents all that is wrong with this lick-arse nation.

I'm no fan of tehNational Nanny but she did honour some of the patriot dead recently at Kilmainham Hospital. They might not be the patriot dead some posters like but lets not start another tedious sf thread. Its all been said before.
Having the OO into the aras is political make believe.

I actually have no problem with commemorating those who died in the world wars, but don't forget those who died for Ireland. I'm sure the president is aware that the same crowd she is welcoming into the Áras, would not allow her to join them? Or is she completely clueless. The Orange Order are institutionalised bigots.

The Fenian B8tch is subverting the Loyal people of Ulster!

She has led astray loyal bretheren who otherwise today would be marching the Queen's streets celebrating their Culture!

Her words of Honeysuckle will never fool a real Ulsterman!

    Shame on those who went!

    Nice One Mary!

Why? What's wrong with her doing this?

Am I the only one to believe that it is absolutely pathetic to hold such strong emotions over a battle that took place 300 years ago?

Mary McAleese seems to be right - people on both sides need to accept what has happened in the past as history and move on. Concilitatory gestures like this should very much be welcomed - even if (or, for a cynic, especially because) it annoys Sinn Fein!

Do you oppose her liaisons with the UPRG?

I don't even oppose her meeting with the OO, it's just doing it exckusively without a sense of balance, out of some weird concept of conflict resolution, that I object to. She is the ultimate yes woman and her crusades are a depressing reminder of how pathetically weak willed we can be in this country.
