Benedict XVI has revived Tridentine Mass.

    Annuntio vobis gaudium magnum!!

In a Papal document, called a "Moto Propriu", issued today, Pope Benedict XVI has revived the Tridentine Mass, (sometimes incorrectly labeled the "Latin Mass") as an extrodinary form of liturgical celebration. The Mass we are used to hearing, "Novus Ordo" of Paul VI, issued in 1970, will continue to be the normal form of celebration. Bishop's, however, will no longer have to give their permission for the Tridentine Mass to be said in their diocese.

Seems fair enough. Choice is always good.

Does it still ask for the conversion of the Jews?

It never did. I have the 1962 Missal here in front of me. There is no such prayer anywhere in it.

No the Missal that is permitted under this Motu Proprio is the 1962 Missal approved by Blessed Pope John XXIII which had deleted the reference to the Jews.

This move by Benedict XVI simply allows for more choice in terms of the Mass. It is a generous outreach to those conservatives who feel alienated by the rush of liturgcal changes following Vatican II and the manner in which the changes were interpreted. It does not imopact on the choice of those who prefer the moder rite - the Novus Ordo which came in in 1970.

I don't think there will be a big increase in Latin Masses - most priests ordained after 1970 dont have much, if any, working knowledge of Latin.

    Hey TradCat,

Quite correct. It does not appear in the 1962 Missal of Blessed Pope John XXIII, which is the one being revived. Previous missals did contain a prayer in the Good Friday Liturgy for the conversion of "perfidious" jews, but the Good Pope did not agree with it and had it removed prior to publishing his missal in 1962. There is a story told that when a Cardinal, saying the Good Friday liturgy after its removel, forgot and said the prayer, Pope John made him stop and start over again.

What about the other older Masses, such as the Ambrosian Rite. Is he allowing them to be said also?

Y'see, this is where us 'normal people' loose contact.
