Major rescue operation at childrens regatta

A major rescue operation is under way off Dún Laoghaire harbour in Co Dublin after a number of small sailing yachts were overturned by severe weather.

According to the Department of Transport, four local yacht clubs were taking part in a junior regatta involving 91 boats and 110 children when the weather worsened sharply at around 2.15pm, leading to a number of boats overturning.

The children involved were aged between 10 to 15 years.

Lifeboats from Dún Laoghaire and Howth along with a Dublin-based coastguard helicopter are involved in rescuing the children.

It is not yet clear how many of the boats overturned or whether there have been any injuries.

A Dublin Fire Brigade spokesman said a large number of units have been sent to the scene, including specialist water rescue units.

Major incident' at Dún Laoghaire pier

Emergency services are attending what has been described as a "major incident" at Dún Laoghaire pier.

Reports on the incident are unclear, with some suggesting a bus carrying children entered the water. Other reports say it was a yachting incident.

A Dublin Fire Brigade spokesman said numerous appliances had been sent to the scene, including specialist water rescue units. Helicopters were also involved, he added

Ireland.com says nothing about a bus entering the water so let's clear that away please.

It describes a young persons' flotilla of sailboats incurring a number of capsizes due to a weather shift.

Will be serious consiquences for this. Just rang a member of a Dun Laoghaire Yacht Club. There was a Small Craft Warning from the MET office in effect since last night. In these circumstances it is usual practise for yacht clubs to cease all events on the water. In this case the yacht clubs pushed on with a junior regatta regardless.
