Homes attacked in the Short Strand.

    Troops Out Movement News 05/07/05

A number of homes in the Short Strand were attacked over the weekend, including that of murdered Belfast man Robert McCartney’s fiancée.

East Belfast Sinn Féin Representative Deborah Devenny today blamed loyalists for the attacks.

Ms Devenny said: "On Saturday night a loyalist gang was seen by local people coming down the Mountpottinger Road and throwing stones and bottles at a number of nationalist homes in the Short Strand.

"Windows were broken and minor damage was caused to a number of homes. The gang was then seen running away from the scene."

A sister of Robert McCartney, Paula Arnold, however, has said that her family believe the attacks were carried out by local youths who do not agree with the family's on-going campaign.

Ms Arnold claimed that she was informed by the PSNI that a crowd of youths had gathered on the green beside Ms Hagans’ house at around 2.10am on Saturday morning when the attack took place.

Although she admitted that the PSNI didn't actually see the attacks.

She said: "Some local people are blaming loyalists for the incident. However, the PSNI have a camera pointing from the PSNI station in the direction of Bridgeen’s front door and they have confirmed that no strangers went down the road on the night.

"They say they didn’t see who threw the stone and bottles but they do know that it came from the green."

A spokesperson for Sinn Féin yesterday said the party "totally and unreservadly" condemned any attack against Ms Hagans or any other member of the McCartney family.

"We unequivocally condemn any acts of intimidation or acts of violence against the family.

"The family have our full support in their endeavours and Gerry Adams will be meeting with them over the next few days."

Ms Devenny said: "These attacks obviously came in the wake of the weekend Orange Order and UVF parade past the Short Strand and tensions were obviously running high.

"I would appeal to nationalists in the area to remain vigilant in the days approaching the twelfth."
The day will dawn when all the people of Ireland will have the desire for freedom to show.
It is then we'll see the rising of the moon.

Indeed. The next time your street is being pelted with stones etc you can just get out of the place. Minister Michael might put you up at his place.

Have you contacted Sinn Féin about it?

They might send someone. Probably a Dublin TD.

Who said the PDs were unionists?
Banned temporarily by politics.co.uk (ie this site) so as not to "offend" the Brits during Mrs. Windsor's visit.
Still censored because I cannot start a thread!

You did. Without providing a convincing argument.

Now you're implying that mjcoughlan's views are representative of the policies of the PDs, and the views of their members.

This is despite members of the PDs on this site previously stating that mjcoughlan's views are not representative of the party.

It is also in spite of mjcoughlan and other Freedom Instituers leaving the Young PDs because it wasn't right-wing enough for them.

But don't let any of that get in the way of your conclusion that the PDs are a unionist party. Presumably you have all the evidence anyone would need, constructed into a logical argument with a reasonable conclusion. You just haven't gotten round to sharing that argument with us yet.
