Finbarr Flynn writing for Bloomberg begin and ends his article with the story of one Mr Roche who is urging his son to emigrate to Australia. The remainder of the article focuses on Irish unemployment and is a reasonably fair assessment of our sitution.
Irish Urge Children to Leave Amid Job Losses- BloombergThis is going to be the hardest year of all, much harder than last year as the government is cutting everywhere,” he said. “I am trying to get my youngest son to go Australia if he can get a visa. I’ve told him we’ll even put together a bit of money to send to him every month.”
Finbarr Flynn generalizes from a single instance and the headline is not supported by the content. Yes, emigration has returned and returned very quickly. But to assert we are encouraging such emigration instead of fighting through the recession is unfair and creates a very poor impression of the Irish ability to create industry. I don't know any parents who encourge their children to emigrate and apart from their general incompetence, I am not aware of any specific government policy to encourge emigration.
So are we urging our children to leave? Or are they leaving despite our best attempts to keep them here ?
