BT Junkie has just shut down

A sign of things to come?

This is the end of the line my friends. The decision does not come easy, but we've decided to voluntarily shut down. We've been fighting for years for your right to communicate, but it's time to move on. It's been an experience of a lifetime, we wish you all the best!

Ask not what your country can do for you, but what your country can do for a bank

You'll never fully know the true immense power of a man like Sean Sherlock.

So why did they shut it down then?

Never bothered with it much. Prefer The Pirate Bay and Monova. Alas I fear more sites like BTJunkie will be forced to close.

I recall when Napster was being pressured by the recording labels there were emails of senior record label execs being sent around in the usual "pressure them to leave poor napster alone".

My template email (as I figured it was a good use of my lunchtime mailing session) went along the lines of "look, file sharing is here to stay, back napster in a way that suits your interests, as clearly people want to download music".

Doubtless there were dozens of people within music firms who could see the way things were heading but weren't in a position to influence the possibly more mediocre people who'd fought their political way to the top, the sort of people who think it's a question of clamping down instead of embracing.

The record companies stagnated, and compute-maker Apple recognised that a quality, reliable, affordable service (itunes) that empowers users through choice is a winner. Music and videos are doing well out of this platform.

Now, we see ourselves looking at software. Steam, an online games distributor, has the right idea. We need more of these. You continue to pay for a product, but you know what you are getting.

with respect to the freedom of the internet, well pirates of all hues start out when the system discriminates against commerce that people want to happen. The system can evolve and make piracy irrelevant. That's a goal to work towards.

Sorry but I genuinely don't know what 'torrent sharing' is. Or is it just 'torrent'?

Whatever it is it sounds like more censorship.
A P.ie moderator stated this on June 25th 2010: P.ie tolerates very broad free speech, and thus allows sectarian bigotry etc

    Never heard of them.

    Just like Willie O'Dea's mother.

    I don't care.

The electric flames of liberties oppressors have once more been rekindled. Always remember who struck the match.

Only one thing matters: live a good, happy life. Do your heart's bidding, even when it leads you on paths that timid souls would avoid. Even when life is a torment, don't let it harden you.
