all because they havent the balls to tackle david beg and jack o connor.
It was an expensive agreed commitment from the previous government. The current government is honouring it to reduce numbers quick.
Dont blame people in their 50's taking it as they will never be able to have such good benefits in the next 20 years.
That was my thought up until yesterday, when we found out that the new crowd hadn't amended it to exclude the Director of Corporate Enforcement. The new government were aware of the impact (eg teachers leaving before the end of the school year ) but didn't do anything about it.
1) There needs to be targetted removal of the minority of deadwood/clockwatchers/useless/sick/stressed from the public service - it is call management.
2) Those who do retire early from the public service should not be able to get the benefit of their pension if they take up employment in the private sector.
3) There should be certain categories of public sector workers who should be precluded from taking up employment in certain setors after early retirement because of conflicts of interest and the fear that the last period in the public sector is perceived to be influenced by the move eg this should appply to revenue, regulators, gardai, judges, ministers and EU Commissioners.
This was always going to be a problem but it is overhyped. There are thousands of retirements every year. It is just that most of them have been brought forward to February. There always had to be a date after which the pay cuts hit pensions. FF put this back so they would not have to deal with a sudden mass exodus.
The problem is the embargo on recruitment and other cuts. These are interacting with the retirements. By the way, it is not really an early retirement scheme. The only people who find it worthwhile are those at or near 40 years service. Pensions will still only be paid from normal retirement age (usually 60). Anyone who retires earlier gets a lower (actuaraily reduced) pension which would negate the benefit of going now anyway.
