    "Cynics are really stupid people"

Chris Martin from Coldplay said that 'cynics were really stupid people' at saturdays Live8 concert...whcih makes it difficult to feel cynical about Live8 without feeling like some kind of slime-mould.

Was all the talk of building awareness, of making povery history, aimed at cyncics or the blissfully ignorant? Or just the g8 governments?

What happens when the g8 governments won't/can't agree to do as the movement demands?

Who is going to show these governments the door and demand that they do the right thing? The blissfully unaware, (who may forget Live8 in a matter of days/hours/minutes) or the cynics, who will remember (bitterly!).

I have to hold up my hand and say I am cyncial (I'm not a cynic naturally) but being scolded by musicians makes me wonder if this isn't just designed to make us all feel better about ourselves (in the West) and that people who can't see that (cynics) are part of the problem (because they make people feel bad about themselves).

I wouldn't take Chris Martin or Coldplay very seriously at all, personally.

I don't really know ... being cynical is a personal philosophy and to claim that it has X effect on the world is sort of difficult to measure I'd think.

Surely a cynic is just a disappointed optimist?

    Sober.
It is hard not to look upon the whole Live8 thing with stoicism and cynicism. People die. They will continue to die. Until the governmental structures change, forgiving debt will change very little. The same crooks will be in power and AIDS will continue to destroy Africa. Will Live8 change anything?

    Regards...jmcc

    He also said:

"This is the greatest thing organised in the history of the world"

so I wouldn't take him too seriously.
