The tipping point will eventually arrive and large numbers will take to the streets, and when that happens the senior gardai will be smart enough to realise that the game is up and the govt are finished, they will side with the people, pull the officers back to the stations and wait for the dust to settle,

The govt might call the army, but those guys will know the score and prob won't even answer the phone,

The dogs in the street know we are being raped, the state forces will not ever try to fight the people on this one, if only because they too have friends and families!

And if they did try to crush an uprising, well, I for one would worry about their futures!

True, though we have also setup a large and long term capital drain via the exchequer. Exporters might be relatively unaffected, but large sums of money leaving the economy in interest payments is not going to lead to growth in the domestic economy.

The interest we're paying is high but should start to come down over the next decade. We had similar levels of debt back in the 80's. Assuming we get continuous yearly growth we'll get the debt back down to manageable levels.

What will be the first step- and the others afterwards- which will make the situation better in this country than it is now?
What gives you the idea that toppling the government will change anything at all?
The civil service is running the country- regardless of a government in power or not.

Not sure what you're on if you think there is going to be an uprising here. 85% of the workforce is employed and paid better than the average EU citizen. We have generous social welfare. The Greeks were not that well off to start with, there is massive tax evasion, huge levels of unemployment particularly among the young. They're naturally more passionate than we are to boot.

Are you actually suggesting there will be an Irish uprising? You really haven't a clue. Unlike Greece, Ireland could wipe out its deficit by going after the welfare class and public service. Although they are a large number, the rest of the population hugely outnumbers them. Such protests wouldn't have popular support.

The greek government can't cut its way out of trouble, it also has to raise taxes on the private sector. It also has less social cohesion, the state is relatively new, unlike Ireland.
