    The Nobel Prize

I hope there isn't some sort of move to give Rushdie the Nobel Prize as a result of these threats.

I suspect that Orhan Pamuk got the Nobel last year because of threats against by Turkish UntraNationalists. I think he would have won it eventually but he was only 54.

Pamuk's decision to leave Istanbul is a betrayal of his own life's work.

Borges never won the Nobel prize and this was in part I suspect because he was percieved as not having condemned the coup and the dirty war.

Should Politics.ie play a role in the award of the Nobel prize?

    Indupitably.

We should agree our official nominations under each category.
And then vote a nominee or two onto the deciding committee.
That's complete nonsense. I disagree with you.

I would say you were not wrong their, although he had been favourite 12 months previously.

He may well have as he is a fantatastic writer but I do think you're correct, he was too young.

    Hardly. Two words, Hrant Dink.

His politics was certainly part of it alright. I think its fair to say Gunter Grass would not have been awarded the prize for political reasons if they knew then what we know now, even if his lifes work may have still made him a contender.

Indeed, I think that David should head the jury, along with a broad spectrum of posters on the site.

On whether Rushdie should get the prize or not all I can say having only read Midnights Children is that my life was not dramatically improved by the experiance and I have little wish to read any of his other work.

Anyone else with any thoughts on this.
