    FF-GN committed to introducing civil partnerships

    The FF-GN programme has committed the government to introducing civil partnerships for same sex couples.

    Fine Gael was already committed to introduced civil partnerships in his manifesto, as was Labour.

    So the only issue is how quickly. It probably will be really quickly. Otherwise FG and Labour will propose it as a private members motion. With a consensus across the parties (no party as far as I know opposes it) it seems 100% certain to be implemented.

    Labour already has done this not more than 4 months ago. FF voted against it!

    I know. I was there. But now they are committed to supporting it.

    Will they publish a draft bill for Legalising Same Sex partnerships by the Pride march of next week? Would be a good sign if they would. Otherwise I'm doubtful we will ever see it happen

    Worth examining the Manifesto's of the three Government parties on this one.

    Fianna Fail

    Based on our republican ethos and building on the agenda for equality to which we are committed, we will address the need to provide a legal framework that supports the rights of same sex couples, including by extending State recognition to civil partnerships between such persons so that they can live in a supportive and secure legal environment.

    Green Party

    1. seek legislation that would remove all gender specific terms from current legislation and regulations governing the granting of marriages to allow same-sex couples enjoy the rights and responsibilities of civil marriage;

    2. recommend the creation of a new category of ‘civil partnership’, an institution that could be created and dissolved with more ease than marriage. This would be available to both heterosexual and same-sex couples;

    Progressive Democrats

    Civil Partnership - The Progressive Democrats will bring forward a proposal for protection and fairness for unmarried persons who are in long-term cohabiting relationships – regardless of the sexual orientation (if any) of their relationship.

    Programme for Government

    Civil Partnerships
    This Government is committed to full equality for all in our society. Taking account of the options paper prepared by the Colley Group and the pending Supreme Court case, we will legislate for Civil Partnerships at the earliest possible date in the lifetime of the Government.

    It would appear that the programme for government is not refelctive of Green policy on this one. Instead it is a direct transplant of the FF and PD manifestos.

    I'm sure the Greens must be so happy to find that they now have as their programme for government is really the FF and PD manifestos.

    If you are so happy pushing FF's agenda, why are you not a member?

    Isn't it amazing how native Greens have become so quickly. You'd never think only a few weeks ago the Greens were vicious against FF and telling people they had to get them out.
