The BNP has lost a by election today and with it goes their only elected rep in London

Assuming it delights you, that is.
While you're at it, you could send a few emails to Rafsanjani gloating over his recent presidential defeat, and one to each of the UUP candidates defeated by Reg Empey last night.
Why stop there? Send a few emails to Fine Gael, rubbing their noses in recent general election defeats. You could pass the same email onto Labour too.
Why not bang one off to Winston Churchill laughing at his failure to get re-elected after World War II.

My point is this - democracy permits all voices their say, even (some might say especially) if you do not agree with some of them. The BNP, as the name suggests, is a British political party, entirely entitled to stand for election in London. Londoners are entirely entitled to elect them or not as is their wish. Why this should become the subject of an Irish email campaign is frankly beyond me. Unless, of course, some of you have problems with the idea of freedom of speech in foreign countries.

Big deal. The BNP haven't brought their country into an illegal war, faked intelligence, lied to Parliament, etc, etc, etc.

I suggest you find bigger targets Ireland2004.

How does this follow? Ireland2004 hasn't said anything about freedom of speech, in this country or any other. He's simply pleased that the BNP lost an election, which is a perfectly valid opinion to hold.

Finding the views of a particular party disgusting, and taking pleasure in their defeats is not the same as believing that that party does not have the right to exist. Even holding the position that the world would be a better place if that party did not exist does not impinge on any rights the BNP holds.

I know exactly who they are. They're politically irrelevant frankly.

New Labour isn't and New Labour has done a lot worse things than the BNP!

Just because I hate the BNP doesnt mean I don't hate Labour.

That may be true, but theyre still not as bad as the BNP. The only reason LAbour have done such bad things is because they are in power. Imagine the BNP in power!

My point stands - why not email everyone who ever lost an election anywhere to gloat?
Beyond the fact that it is pointless - the emails will no doubt be confined to the trash folder - it also strikes me as unseemly to bang off emails to parties in other countries on the occasion of their losing an election. Why not show a more positive interest in British politics, if that does indeed interest you, by sending one of congratulations to whoever won?
This strikes me as a petty and crass way of somehow claiming solidarity with those who defeated the BNP in the election, without having done anything to contribute to either the victory or defeat of course.
And why should people in Ireland concern themselves with the fortunes of a minor fringe party in another country that poses democracy in this country no threat whatsoever? As email campaigns go - and they usually go nowhere - this is up there with naming Wembley after Roy Keane.

Just what exactly is the Bye Election the BNP has 'lost'?

I think though that the BNP has found out the hard way that taking seats in Parliament has to be done from the ground up. In other words they must build a base of elected Councilors then go from there. Given however that Britain has the FPTP system it will be an uphill struggle for them. If ever PR is brought in over there then I am sure they will have representives in Westminister.
