Refugees are getting cars for free as the Government doles out cheques worth thousand s of euros each.

The health board hand outs are supposed to help asylum seekers feed their families.
Instead, they are being used to buy secondhand motors, including BMWs and Toyotas.
One man told the Irish Mirror how two Nigerians gave him a 4000 euro State cheque as a deposit for a car. The Department of Social, Community and family affairs told him that everything was “fine”.

A Government source said: The amount they get is based on how many children they have. There’s nothing we can do about it –we have to give cheques once their claim for assistance is accepted.

“After that they do whatever they like with the cheques. Refugees are buying old BMWs and Toyotas instead of spending money on their families.” One man told the Irish Mirror:

“ A friend if mine advertised his car in Buy and Sell for 8000 euro . “ “Two Nigerian men called to the door and asked if he wanted to take a cheque as a deposit.” “He was shocked to see that it was a Government cheque. He rang the Government department concerned and was told was fine. He couldn’t believe it.

To think that this sort of thing is happening when there is an outcry that nothing in Ireland is sick. ” A former refugee camp at Mosney, Co Meath, where 700 refugees are housed, is said to be fully of secondhand cars. Fine Gael councillor Therese Ridge said: “I’m aware what’s going on. I personally know about a man who got 8000 euro in two health board cheques when he sold his car to Nigerians. It’s a disgrace to think this sort of thing is happen when Irish people are struggling to make ends meet. I have sympathy for refugees who are legitimately seeking asylum here from war-torn areas but to hand out money in these large sums is just not right. It does not set a good example and is sure to infuriate other young people in this country who cannot afford to buy a car. I agree with money being given for genuine needs but not for buying cars........"

I doubt that any action on this has been taken since even newcomers seem to be at the same scam several years on.
I strongly suspect it's only the proverbial tip of the iceberg of course.

1. Learn the difference between Asylum Seeker and Refugee.

2. Any idea how many Irish people use social assistance to buy cars? Probably doesn't make the papers... and certainly not in the bastion of responsible and straightforward reporting, The Mirror.

3. The government isn't providing anyone with cars. They are providing them with social assistance that then can be used for whatever that family needs -- including cars.

4k will not buy you much of a BMW. Hell, it won't buy you a 1998 Micra.
Two families buying a car together isn't exactly the "easy life"... and 8 grand will buy you a 4 year old Punto with reasonable mileage.

A good one was at a seminar in limerick a guy stood up and said he had a health board cheque to prove a nigerian had gotten money to buy a car and had bought one off him at his garage(hence he had the cheque)....a health board rep asked to see it there and then, your man walks up proud as punch hands it over and the health board rep goes.....'thats our new consultants pay cheque'
the new black consultant had gone to buy a car and given your man his wage cheque signed as a deposit.

The simple point is that the urban myth doing the rounds is that "Asylum seekers get free cars". This is false. If an asylum seeker can get together a few bob to but a second-hand jalopy, that's another matter. The Mirror, for reasons known only to itself, decided to use a story which is basically "Asylum seekers buy second-hand cars" to fuel this urban myth by giving it the spectacularly dishonest headline "Free cars for asylum seekers: cash grants to buy BMWs".

The urban myth however, remains just that: a myth.

well, in fairness it's more than a few quid.
A 93 car might set you back €500 to €1000 depending on model and condition.
You'd definitely need a service to get past the NCT.
Then there's the insurance, steep I'd imagine for a Nigerian with no record here.
Road tax about €300 pa
Then there's petrol and parking.



How do you do that on €19 in the hand, a week?

Finally, I don't think Nigerian driver licences are recognised here but I stand to be corrected on that.
