Possibly. But then again, many are not permitted to work, while apart from the aforementioned hospital consultant, most of the others would be likely to be in very low paid jobs.

Many are though. I've seen many people who look like immigrants in town wearing suits, so they aren't all in low paid jobs.

Let's think about this a minute, as we all seem bogged down in anecdote at the moment.
There are over 10,000 Chinese in Dublin, mostly here on various types of student visas that permit part time work. You see these guys all over the place, doing their bit in low pay scenarios.
There are an increasing number of Poles and Balts coming here in the past year now they have the right to work here. And again, you do see them in many jobs. I think the Irish Times recently ran the numbers of how many have come here in the past year or so and it ran into thousands.
We are also aware that there has been significant immigration from African countries, notably Nigeria, in recent times. Apart from the hospital consultant and the net cafe operators, how many of these are working?
My understanding, from the Mrs, is that most are barred from doing so as their claims are processed.
Others, many of whom claimed residency as parents of Irish national children, can.
I too have seen a number of black people in suits in Dublin. Oddly enough, most of them have English accents not African ones. My other half is out of the country right now, but in her absence could someone enlighten us all as to how many Africans are working on the live register compared to how many of working age are not?

As best as I can see the vast majority of West African adults here have no jobs.

Where they get the money for cars, houses, mobile phones, etc is something I just don't have the answer to.

But I would love to know!

Any evidence to support this contention? Or is it just another McDowellesque "I know what I know"?

The majority cannot therefore be the elite.

Secondly, Flakie, don't be so quick to make assumptions about people. My wife didn't ever have a kid. My child is from a previous relationship. Secondly, she works two jobs in order to fund her studies. She has not received a penny of aid from the state, as she is American.
And are you merely trying to be offensive with the neanderthal comment?
I am keen to hear how you run two cars on less money than me. Do please tell, I could clearly use the financial advice.
I don't know. As the bank manager says, people with less money make the money go further -- but I won't assume you give a sh*t.

We're also in an unrecognised foreign marriage so I can still be deported at any time -- so savings are vital to us.

By the way -- I assume by non-national you include people like your American wife, or my American friend who drives a car with an early 90s reg? Or myself that drives a crappy little old Micra? Or is it just black people and aisans that must be sponging off the state? Or are you just *trying* to be offensive.

What kind of evidence would satisfy you?

I live in an area with high immigration rates and as I am a generally observant fellow that is my belief.

Obviously some are working and fair play to those that do.

Thankfully -- all in the past.

Y'see, we're moving further away from my job.
