Can I take it that you've decided this is as far as you're going to go in defending your position? Are you going to tell us more about how you believe the government gives asylum seekers money for cars or not?

If I may repeat myself, what truth? Exactly what is it you people are on about? I feel we are no nearer than when this thread began.

Forgive me for reviving an old and venerable thread, most of which is nonsense, but I just was leafing through old copies of The Slate and was amused to note that they featured this Irish Mirror article in their "Tabloid Watch" in October 2002.

The full text is reproduced below for your delectation:
Quote Originally Posted by The Slate
While Ireland is in the midst of a depression not seen since the days of the famine, and honest Celtic natives are being forced to endure humiliating poverty, the government is insulting us all by handing out free cars to filthy asylum-seekers.

This latest affront to the nation was spotted by the keen-eyed hawks in the Irish Daily Mirror, whose front page headline said it all: "Free cars for Refugees - Cash grants buy BMWs". The story beneath was clearly the result of some diligent investigation, involving at least two phone calls, and twenty minutes looking up animal porn on the web.

Apparently two refugees had paid for one car using a government-issue cheque - irrefutable proof that every asylum-seeker is being driven around in a limousine, while the rest of us have to walk everywhere in our bare feet. "Refugees are getting cars for FREE as the Government doles out cheques worth thousands of euro each," explained the Mirror, and there was a queue of idiots the length of O'Connell St lining up to demonstrate the fury this was causing at ground level.

"To think that this sort of thing is happening when there is an outcry that refugees are getting nothing is sick," said the ubiquitous Joe-Dublin type, who is always anonymous and always supplies his quotes in suspicious tabloidese catch phrases.

Dumb bitches such as Fine Gael councillor Therese Ridge also got in on the act: "It is a disgrace to think that this kind of thing is happening when Irish people are struggling to make ends meet," said Therese, who was delighted to be getting her name in the papers.

But that wasn't all. The Mirror had other bits of concrete evidence at hand to prove that refugees are all dangerous freeloaders who should be deported from the country in coffin ships. "A former holiday camp at Mosney, Co. Meath, where 700 refugees are housed is said to be full of second-hand cars".

Surely that was posted to show how ridiculous the tabloids are? Can't imagine that anyone would post a story this blatantly ridiculous to make a point

It's true that there is very little difference in tone and content between the satirical take of The Slate and the straight-faced contributions of wizzard et al. Sadly, however, it does appear that wizzard really did think that the Mirror article would in some way prove his point that asylum seekers are given free cars.
