'This situation is a total farce. I find it hard to believe that a convicted cocaine dealer was made a prison 'Trustee' and allowed to leave the prison. This breakdown in prison protocol demands an urgent investigation. Drug dealers of this calibre should simply not be allowed to leave prison. 'Unfortunately, it looks like this escapee has every chance of success. He has no ties to Ireland, no fixed address, and could easily slip over the border into Northern Ireland. 'Minister McDowell shirked responsibility for Budgiegate, and had to be embarrassed into a crackdown on prison contraband. His response to the discover of mobile phones, flat screen TVs and DVD players inside Portlaoise was that 'somebody will have to be held accountable'.
