    Irish media are weak

Why is it the Irish media are so weak when it comes to reporting on this election. For the past month now alkl they have focused on is Bertie's suspect personal finances. I have yet to see one outlet focus on the deal Woods did with the church and very little mention has been given to all the other wastes of taxpayers money by the current government. Anybody who wouldn't know much about politics would think Bertie was actually a good Taoiseach. Are the media all biased for FF or taking a few pay offs or what's going on?

Mind you, that works both ways. If they had left his personal finances out of it and looked at the economy and employment figures, FF could be heading for an overall majority.
Also, the media talked up Kenny's poor performance at the debate saying he had leadership qualities, etc whereas the voting population were generally of the opinion that Ahern was easily the winner.

If FG or Labour were to start bleating about the media at this stage, it would look defeatist and whiny.

Why does he think the media is biased towards Bertie? Have we forgotten who started Bertiegate I and II? Of course the O'Reilly bunch got in behind him eventually; did anyone read that article by Eoghan Harris saying that Bertiegate was a plot by SF/IRA to take over? That man's worth his weight in gold. Anyway, in their own way they're hardly weak.

Ireland needs a dedicated news and politics channel. During an election every issue could be given the air time it deserves.

Well, only RTÉ could probably handle such a channel. However I'd prefer if they didn't, because the channel would need to be fresh and modern in order to survive. Obviously it'd have to be independent of political control.

Of course, McDowell's proposals to introduce further laws protecting the guilty from scrutiny won't exactly strengthen our media.
We need a proper revamp of libel laws, not a gag law. And the privacy bill is an attempt to silence investigative reporting, just as the law banning cops from talking to the press was.

If any newspaper were to list every waste of money this government presided over they would be seen as overwhelmingly biased and influencing the course of the election! (That said they could balance it with a list of things the opposition could have done but didn't.)

Also, this is an era of 24-hour-breaking-news' so anything older than a few days is pushed safely to the archives (or tribunals).
