Could people stop constantly using the term 'shinners' to describe republicans. I am not a Shinner, Cael is not a shinner, WBS is not a Shinner, SlartiB is not a Shinner, BeardyBoy is not a Shinner, Kev 408 might be, but most of the posters on this thread are not.

    irish republicans

I just stumbled on this board from a link on google news and felt had to reply to 32's idea of a 'modern irish republican'

The notion that you have to be socialist to be a republican, the notion that you have to want a 32 county ireland to be a republican, the notion that you have to be a martyr to be a republican, complete nonsense.

Look in the dictionary, none of these apply.

Just for clarification I'm not a member of Sinn Fein. I will (as I have always) vote for them, a Green, and one or two independents because FG or FF are simply trash.

What colourful prose! I tried a few dictionaries for a definition of 'spoof-monger' but the best I could find was this from Dictionary.com:

No results found for 'spoof-monger'. Did you mean spider monkey (in dictionary) or Space Monger (in encyclopedia)?

'union-jack ensconsed' is another brilliant creative description, the definition of 'ensconced' (spelt with a 'c' by the way) being 'positioned safely or comfortably somewhere'. The problem is, the only flag I own is a green, white and orange tricolour.

Now, 'darken the soles of my shoes' is a good one. I feel that it's usually pretty dark under a person's shoes, if he is standing in them. How would it get any darker if you stood on my door-step?

Anyway, you wouldn't make it past the armed, balaclava-wearing 'security' staff!

P.S: Ease up on the attempted bullying Caomhán.
Who would want green "one of the mob" ratings? Red and proud!

Would this have anything to do with the fact that it is referring only to the general meaning of a republican, ie, those who wish to see a republican or non-monarchist form of government. Dictionaries neither have the space, purpose or will to get into the nuances of Irish radical political theory.

If you have no real argument and wish to resort to pedantry that's fine by me. There's no need for an apostrophe between 'is' and 'the only flag', nor between 'shoes' and 'if he is standing'. 'Balaklava does not have the letter 'c' in it. 'Balaklava-wearing' or 'balaclava-wearing' do not appear in the dictionary.

Now grow up and stop being miffed just because you were pulled up for insulting people whilst telling others how wrong insulting is.

p.s. Kevin as Gaeilge is Caoimhin. (Ctrl, alt and vowel does not work on my computer).

I'm very proud to be a Shinner.

I think one Bobby Sands thread is more than enought.
