Kevin Myers - The Deaths of Reckless Idiots

Hard to disagree with Kevin Myers today and the way we celebrate the deaths of reckless idiots with the President and Taoiseach sending condoleneces to their familys. Where's the condelences for the other young people who die through illness and at no fault of their own?

Thanks for uploading this, Dunlin. Just heard text reaction to a Newstalk item on this. Was about to go up for an Indo but you've saved me a walk and dosh.

Myers is usually on the money - no exception here. He articulates what the silent majority think.

Shock, horror. Myers uses the silly season to get free publicity. Yawn.

In fairness, he's covered this subject before and he is right, even if it's very unpalatable. His tone is measured (for him) and he is reflecting the issue that this HAS to become socially unacceptable .

kids do this for kicks. Shoplifting would give a kick too, and it's far safer, but there is a real risk that you will bring shame on yourself and family and will end up mesing up your life. kids don't see the same from a car crash, which happens "to other people" the perspective is that as ling as you don't crash, you've done nothing wrong, but as Myrers says, actuarially, it's inevitable.

    Succinct and to the point.

Hard to argue too much with that. If young people want to drive cars like adults they need to live by adult rules.

If they die they die. Less chance of them crashing into some innocent and killing them imo.

I am with him on this one.

Far too much tolerance among liberals in particular for anti-social car drivers who think the rules of the road don't apply to them. These cowboys almost make us feel guilty for using the same road as them. We've all had experience of meeting some scumbag coming around a corner in their souped up car and half way over the other side of the road.

When I see a wheelchair bound former joyrider who put his own life and more importantly those of innocent people at risk, I don't feel one bit of sympathy. Since our justice system is pathetic in dealing with boy racers, at least a good auld crash administors justice.

A clown who kills 5 or 6 passengers in their car should be treated and called a serial killer.

The more we tolerate and allow, the more we aid and abet and encourage them.

I think at last the Road Safety Authority is thinking of bringing in nighttime curfews for younger drivers and also banning more than one passenger. The cowboys only understand one thing, strong pre-emptive measures against them.

    Great post - totally agree.

But what are the chances of Fr Morrissey going "My dear people , we are gathered here today to commit to a six foot hole the carcass of this tearaway scumbag........".

Would his bishop consider this a profitable business approach ?
