40 Billionaires pledge to donate half of their wealth

A little over a year after Bill Gates and Warren Buffett began hatching a plan over dinner to persuade America's wealthiest people to give most of their fortunes to charity, more than three-dozen individuals and families have agreed to take part, campaign organizers announced Wednesday.

In addition to Buffett and Gates — America's two wealthiest individuals, with a combined net worth of $90 billion, according to Forbes — 38 other billionaires have signed The Giving Pledge. They include New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, entertainment executive Barry Diller, Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison, energy tycoon T. Boone Pickens, media mogul Ted Turner, David Rockefeller, film director George Lucas and investor Ronald Perelman.

A combined give-away of €230 Billion to philanthropy.

Would seem to contradict the following Economist article somewhat:

Wealth, poverty and compassion: The rich are different from you and me | The Economist

Unless, uber-rich people are more generous that normal rich people. Good stuff from Gates and Buffet, anyway (In addition to the fact that both have already pledged to bequeath almost all their respective fortunes to charity)

They cause the world to become a filthy cess pit through their speculations and monopolies - then they make a big show of giving their ill gotten gains to "charity." If it werent for vermin like these, there would be no need for charity.

What was 'ill-gotten' about Bill Gates' wealth, pray tell?

He's contributed more to the world, than you or I ever shall.

Finally, Cael, merely because the world live in may be a 'filthy cess pit', doesn't me the world actually is thus.

If you got $1 for every whiny post you put up here moaning about capitalism, you be able to donate $9288 to charity like these boyos.

    Think of the possibilities
Is that computer you are posting with running microsoft by any chance?

No, really he didn't. He contributed nothing to the world at all.

If I wanted to steal money from the poor - and then make a big show of donating it to "charity" I could do that. There are a billion people hungry in the world today, according to the UN. But, there is enough food in the world to feed everyone. It's because of capitalist scum like these that anybody is hungry.

What did he contribute? Did he invent computers? Did he invent the internet? What did he do - except condemn the whole software industry to mediocrity?

But, it's always interesting to see how Paddy will fawn over the rich.
