luckily for the tax payer this was not family of twelve
Hey guy's there is more than the parent who sued the State and the solicitor on their behalf at fault here.
Even if we do accept that there may have been negligence on the part of prison authorities (which would have to be proved in the context of reasonably preventable), what about the state claims agency and the solicitor/barrister acting on the State's behalf for not contesting this claim, and the other actors like doctors who provided reports on the supposed psychological affect that witnessing this fight had on the two children, and lets not forget the JUDGE who approved this award.

And in addition, I think there needs to be much stiffer penalties for persons who knowingly make false claims including prison. And can you imagine the type of message this is sending to these children who will grow up being conditioned into this type of compo culture and sueing for everything....
The State should now sue the prisoners who were fighting and recoup the loss.
I don't think that children should be visiting inside the main prison either, I would suggest that those serving short sentences should go without any visits. (say 1 year or less) They could have supervised telephone contact instead. Prisoners in for longer should have a special separate block with separate access for family visits. This would take more staff time and would necessitate less visits overall for everyone, but that's life.
I don't see the need to allow other prisoners more than a couple of visitors a year at most, this would ease staffing problems.
Yes this may seem unkind, but it is prison after all, they shouldn't really complain. (though no doubt some would)
I would suspect that for the children one of the worst parts of this is the realisation that daddy is locked up with the type of thugs they saw fighting, they should never have been in that position. It could be argued that the parent contributed to the trauma by being a criminal anf expecting them to visit, None of this takes away from the childrens trauma of course. (I to would have held this money back for Education only, with say €100 for a day out.)
Cira/rira Not in my name.
