Exclusive Limerick Leader/UL poll: 63% in Limerick say Willie O'Dea had to resign

Willie O'Dea: majority in Limerick felt his resignation was necessary

    Published Date: 18 March 2010

    By Alan English

"A MAJOR new opinion poll conducted for the Limerick Leader by researchers based at the University of Limerick has found that almost 63% of the local population believes it was necessary for Limerick's Willie O'Dea to resign as Minister for Defence, after the controversy over his comments about a Sinn Fein councillor."

    Which continued.....

"Commenting on the findings, Maura Adshead, head of the Department of Politics & Public Administration at UL, said the number of respondents who did not believe his departure from office was called for was "smaller than one would expect in a constituency where Willie O'Dea's support has always been so strong. This suggests that many of his own supporters and followers also understand the wider issues at stake. It was necessary for him to resign because if he did not, the government would implicitly be suggesting that name-calling and innuendo are a reasonable way of conducting politics."

What's the betting that the other 37% are roughly the same as the 38.65% who voted for him last time and that they'll all vote for him next time.

A second question in our poll asked how Deputy O'Dea was likely to fare in the next general election.

The biggest percentage of respondents (37%) suggested the controversy would make no difference, with 29.3% saying it would make him less popular with voters and 21.3% of the opinion that it would boost him at the ballot box.
If he were to get under 15,000 votes I'd be very surprised.

With the former 5 seat Limerick East constituency changing to the smaller 4 seat renamed Limerick City, Willie could see his vote falling back to 12,500-13,500, the amount of first preference votes he received in the 1997 and 2002 General Elections.

Completely forgot that, you're probably right about the revised numbers.

I would be stunned if he failed to be elected on the first count. That would represent a radical sea change in Irish attitudes to politicians generally.

    Fiona to target Limerick East?

Fiona O'Malley is supposedly contemplating running as a Fianna Fail candidate in the new Limerick City constituency as the running mate of Junior Minister Peter Power if Willie O'Dea were to decide not to run again at the next General Election.
I don't see O'Dea deciding to quit politics but without Willie unbalancing the ticket the prospect of Fianna Fail retaining two seats in this now 4 seat constituency might be more realistic.
