    Legalise Drugs?

68 year old Patricia Tabram has been threatened with eviction from her bungalow if she continues to use cannabis. She was convicted earlier this month for possessing cannabis plants. She claims that cannabis helps her aches and pains.

Does a person really deserve to go to jail or be made homeless for smoking a joint? Is it really anybody else's buisness wether one takes drugs or not? Does hunting down and arresting drug users waste valuable police resources? Should drugs be legalised?

Reminds me of a classic piece of graffitti I seen in Crumlin a number of years ago.

Some concerned citizen painted "Pushers out. No more drugs." on a wall only to have the message puctuated by some wag to read "Pushers out? No! More Drugs!!"

Cannabis should be legalised IMHO. Harder drugs, no. It's not a question of liberty, it's a question of morality. Can a state just allow people to freely trade and re-distribute cocaine or heroin around the place when they damage society and affect the vulnerable? Mary Harney was correct to ban mushrooms too. They could lead a person onto stronger hollucinagenics like acid.

And, yes, I do believe cannabis should be legalised, but you can read the other thread for the in's and out's of the argument.

Drug prohibition does not work. There are still drugs everywhere, There is still a drug problem, and the criminality associated with the narcotics trade only makes things worse.
Actual morality is doing what is right regardless of what you're told. Religious morality is doing what you're told, regardless of if it's right.

You might want to ban bread knives as well so.

I heard somewhere that in Amsterdam (or Rotterdam?) that since cocaine has become legal, drug gangs have taken over parts of the city, operating with impugnity. Sure, if drugs were legalised everywhere in the morning you would probably have a point, but being realistic, that's not going to happen. If one country liberalises, it becomes a sorting office and smuggling the drugs to other countries where it might not be legal will still attract criminals.

Well i was in Amsterdam last week and it didn't look too bad. I haven't seen the whole city and there are probably slums and parts of the city where crime and addiction are high (like all capital cities) But I don't feel unsafe roaming the streets at midnight on Saturday night.

A lot of the drugs in Amsterdam are sold to and for tourists and this is because Holland is the only place in europe where they're so easily available. You might as well point at drinking patterns in Temple bar as evidence for prohibition of alcohol everywhere.

Just edited to say that in Holland, Cocaine isn't legal (neither is cannabis)

But there's no comparison between alcohol and heroin/cocaine. Alcohol in moderation or whatever is good for you. My point was that Amsterdam has become a legitimate HQIn most other Capitals if you catch a gang sorting coke or heroin they can be prosecuted. If we liberalise coke in Ireland tomorrow, unless everyone does it, then we'll have all sorts of scum brewing without fear

    Coke is legal in Holland
The truth is incontrovertible, malice may attack it, ignorance may deride it, but in the end; there it is.
