I knew a woman, a friend of my mum's, also from Donegal, in England. Her husband, from Mayo, was a well-known builder, decent fellow too, but had the notion that he had to join the Tories to get anywhere. He more or less pushed her into running as a Tory council candidate. She won a lot of Irish support and was elected. Problem was, she hadn't a clue about politics, had left school at 13, and ended up saying stuff that really a Labour politician would say, not really understanding what the difference was. She eventually, after much derision, nearly had a nervous breakdown, and walked away. She turned from a beautiful and vivacious young woman into a shadow of her former self. For some reason I think of her when I see some of the abuse of Mary Coughlan. She should probably be doing something else but I keep thinking that there's a level of abuse that should only be reserved for the real verminous political chancers, not for essentially decent, if flawed, individuals...
