The Department of Arts, Sport & Tourism have finally agreed to a request by Gavin Sheridan of TheStory.ie to an entire data dump of their expenses database between 2005 and 2009.
Gavin realised a few months back the database that was being used by the Department was Oracle's iExpense, so he found out how the database worked, and then made a simple request (simple in execution) for a datadump of that database.
Unsurprisingly, they said no.
But following an appeal to the Information Commissioner, the DAST have settled the request with Gavin and he now has the database (with some minor redactions).
He's blogged about it over on TheStory.ie - I'm sure he's going to need some help going through the expenses database which he's published, the point he's made is not so much about the amount of expenses (about €775k), but the quality of the data, and the ability to quickly establish what systems they're using, and making sure the requests for information (FOI requests) are of a sufficient quality and detail that the departments can't be (eventually) give him what he wants.
Now that Gavin has this data from DAST, he's made similar requests for the same information from a tonne of places....
