    lnternational Women's Day 2010 : March 8th.

just a wee note on the upcoming event, given the huge amount of traffic onto my blog and reports/analysis via lrish Women's NGOs. The EU has announced a Charter to address gender pay-gaps (18%) , increasing women's political representation (abysmal in lreland) and VAW measures (again measurable data on VAW and areas such as rape conviction and reproductive rights access are appalling here , with no legislation for 'X' and over-stretched SATUs) . info here >> http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/...265709447.html

the eradication of all forms of violence against women
    Laughable.

Anyways, the representation issue is a thorny issue because of its implications on Democracy and I personally disagree with a quota in the Dail but would favour Party quota's that reflect the social realities at any given time. So for instance due to female participation in politics I'd favour no more than a 30% quota in parties, at this time, increasing after each election to a maximum of 40% until hopefully the quota system would become redundant. If people choose not to vote for women, then that's just life I'm afraid.

As for gender pay gaps and the percentage of female managers that is a far wider social phenomenon at least partially caused by the fact that women often leave work at an earlier age than men, thus not reaching such positions and by the fact that women are less likely to ask for promotions and raises than men. Pay equality must be addressed but broad statistics such as the pay gap percentage, hide the reasons for pay inequality and serve only to shock, rather than inform.

events range from anarcho-feminist, through high(ish) brow readings and writings.

Hi @cHeal, I have been celebrating Women's day for at least a decade; and I do not find it laughable that in Ireland
we are now below 13% female political representation, nor that FF/PD just like throwing money at quangoes rather
than addressing inequality and producing measurable stats that we are dealing with the rights of women in healthcare,
in violence, in pay and in political representation.

I don't think we are, indeed I reckon FF openly court the traditionalist lobby and deliberately polarise on issues
cos it suits their vote-management, this seems to have infected the Greens who have got ridden of all but one of
    their female political representatives !

Of course some would argue for a Mc Quaidite ideology for women and we can all see how that works,
multiple pregnancies, crap gynae and Natural law type aggrressiveness regarding education and rights.

Groups taking part in the events include: Rag Collective, Lashback, NWCI, DBF and more to be announced.

Fair play dot and before posters - like me I'm afraid- start on about Harney et al,well that's democracy. It's like scumbags winning the lotto; if you vote for some ultra Reaganite woman you aren't going to get the Blue Fairy.

I am Soooooooooooooo sorry but many of us are tired of being on our knees fellating the alpha-male (who turned out
to be a terrible disappointment with the lying 'n all). >>> and have increased the burdens for women through a crappy
    education and healthcare system.

    Like thanks
