    In Praise Of Eugene Regan...

I have attacked Fine Gael's passivity here on many occasions, and I'm still unconvinced that Kenny has what it takes to be a good leader (improvement noted, though). Fine Gael have stayed schtum on too many things that should have been open goals for them in the past. But one (perhaps designated) member of their ranks has been a pain in the arse for the government. Senator Eugene Regan was at the forefront of the campaign to expose the perjurer Ahern for what he was in the time leading up to, and during, the Tribunal lie-fest. He displayed a very good grasp of the minutiae of the evidence that showed Ahern was lying through his teeth to cover up the real sources of his money, and pissed Ahern off mightily. He has virtually single-handedly kept the O'Dea story alive in the Oireachtas when it was seemingly ignored by everyone else, being shouted down by Fianna Fáil Senators for even having the temerity to raise the issue. He rankled O'Dea enough for O'Dea to use the platform given to him by the Sunday Pravdapendent to blackguard O'Regan with information he had trawled the gutters to find (here: The line between political criticism and personal attack - National News, Frontpage - Independent.ie). I think he is an impressive politician, and that it's perhaps time Fine Gael made more use of him.

So, in fairness to FG, a thread to say well done to Regan for the job he did on O'Dea, a gutter politician who had it coming...

Regan get's right under the skin of FF'ers.no doubt about that. I thought his piece in yesterday's Times about FF debasing politics by supporting perjury was great
Didn't Noel Ahern have a go at him for attacking de brudder back in '08

Yes, thanks indeed Eugene. He has also led the way with the complaint to the EU, over NAMA.

It will be interesting to see whether the pivotal role played by Regan in the demise of Willie will result in a return to favour with the party bigwigs, given he's always been out of the loop with party HQ. They did all they could to shaft him in Dun Laoghaire in the 2007 election and followed it up with the shafting of Naja.

No doubt his fellow party member and constituency colleague, he of 1986 All Ireland Hurling Final fame, will be passing on fulsome congratulations to Eugene for the sterling work he's done for the party.

Someone pointed out in the Irish Times last week that Regan is vastly more qualified in the field of economics than George Lee ever was...

You're behind the times, Regan's problem is slightly older.

Genuinely, it's good to see a politician calling it like it is. This is probably what Senators were supposed to be doing in the original design of things. Eugene, for a loose cannon actually hits the target every time. Kind of like he's using smartbomb technology .
A big Thank You Eugene if you're reading.

On the other hand, we can continue to vote for people who get rich from politics.
