I don't want to appear to be defending him - I believe he's conned the electorate and should have stuck it out until the next G.E. at least.
However, when pushed on the policies issue this morning by Ray Darcy of all people, he did state that his view is that you don't attempt to tackle the deficit when the economy is on its knees. Instead, you adopt policies which will encourage growth, and only address the deficit when things have stabilised. In fairness to his critics, he didn't say what should actually be done to encourage growth. However, his fundamental approach to dealing with our current problems is completely at odds with Lenihan's, a sizeable chunk of the media's and all of the neo-liberals on here. It seems also to be at odds with Bruton/Varadkar. His economic policies during a recession seem closest to the labour party really, but I'm guessing that would change when we're no longer in recession (if that ever happens).
Edit. Oops, too slow at typing so post got trumped by didimus above
On Vincent Browne last night he espoused what was essentially a libertarian point of view but refused to outline any policies which he had and admitted he had never written a policy down and presented it to the party. He had to be pushed on several occasions as to what his opinion was on wealth redistribution, never really giving an answer, which wouldn't exactly make him very compatible with Labour.
One of George's problems is that he does not seem too clear about what he wants himself. I think he has been watching too much West Wing if I am honest.
Yeah between Brown and D'Arcy appearances, his story seems to be shifting from "They never listened to me, this left me frustrated and isolated" to "They listened, weren't impressed, and went another way. This made me sad".
Not only am I unsure of his policies, I'm unsure of what exactly he wanted.
Can someone tell me what Enda Kenny should have done to make him feel 'involved'?
Because a front bench position clearly wasn't enough, as he turned it down.
He 'isn't about that' according to himself on the frontline, last night.
He wants policy input. Fair enough. How?
He was put in charge of some policy yoke, and according to Varadkar, never called a meeting.
Also according to V., he was asked to provide input into a document on youth unemployment.........and didn't contribute anything.
Frankly, it appears to me that he felt his talent wasn't recognised, and feted.
Kenny and Bruton have betetr things to be doing than babysitting the 49 other TD's, and 15 odd senators, in cas ethey feel 'ignored'.
Lee was in a position to drive his own agenda by producing policy, and putting it to the front bench.
If that was ignored, fine. He's in the wrong party. But he didn't do that.
I think George suffers from the problem that alot of people suffer from. He knew that smoking was bad for people, heck he might have been far better at pointing it out than alot. However, now the patient is in the operating theatre needing a lung removed, and George just doesn't have a clue what to do.
It is all very well telling us what went wrong in Ireland - most of us already know what went wrong. The difficult thing is about how we deal with that and how we rebuild our society and economy - but in the knowledge that we have huge financial obligations which we either have to meet - which requires certain decisions - or that we default on - which will have various known and unknown effects. George just didn't seem to have anything to offer on these matters.

If I show you to be wrong, then what have I really achieved? If I convince you that I am right, then what difference does that make? But if I discuss my views and obtain insight from yours & you from mine, then we both learn & our perspectives are more informed.
