Granting Irish nationality, after only five years residence [that's Irish national law by the way, not something the EU made us do], to those offered asylum here is exposing our State to an unneccessary lifelong liability , and introducing a spurious motivation to seek asylum here in the first place.

What civil conflict anywhere in the world is over in five years? That's an unrealistic timescale. We can reckon every genuine asylum seeker will be here for five years at least; but we are not behaving as if we know that.

A person accepted as an asylum seeker should be exempted fom future naturalisation procedures, and after his first five years of residence be interviewed annually by Dept of Foreign Affairs staff (ie knowledgeable people) about when he is going home, and his repatriation actively managed.

That would be fair to those needing protection, and fair to the Irish people.
The law as it stands is a bit mad alright.I know a Scots woman who has lived here for about 15 years and has children born here. She decided to go the 'naturalisation ' route to get an Irish passport. After amassing a wealth of documentation to prove her continuous residence,at no little trouble and expense, she was asked for E1000 +.She asked if there was any way this fee could be reduced.Apparently it would be waived if she were a bona fide asylum seeker. She is of Irish descent on both sides ,but its too far back to count. She's a very leftwing type and says its not the fault of the immigrants that the law is an ass.A potent brew for racists to imbibe though,I'd say.

no more of these shouldbe allowed. End all immigration that we can legally do, unless somebody with money wants to move here (which will be rare)

Who knows, if we are reallllly successful, next stop an Irish Islamic Republic and part of the Ummah. Then Mr Egan or whatever his name is can take a bow.
Oh, I don't think he'd be upset about that

    No more 'Asylum Seekers'
    - unless granted prior approval to enter the State.

And only then in very exceptional circumstances.

If we took the lead here I think many other western States would follow in our wake.
How come that practically every Irish person you meet everyday shares your opinion and has done since this asylum business started here and yet such overwhelming opinion is ignored????

Good point. Something to do with the Multicult Brigade and legal profession's vested interests - nice fat salaries and fees with which there mustn't be any interference maybe?

You're right of course. If there was nothing in it for those scuts there wouldnt be an asylum seeker in the land!
