We are prevented from writing a different story about Frank Fahy as it is not officially in the public demain. There are confidentiality issues at play, and the problem would not be with libel (as the story is neither untrue nor does it reflect badly on Mr Fahy) but that a person divulged personal information. However while waiting for the all clear on the other story it is our duty to report the truth on this story.
Fahy, like all FF ministers, saw his department budget in a different light to how it should have been seen. Emily O'Reilly's report merely puts meat on the bones.
Fahey rejects FG allegation of assault in row over Lost at Sea scheme report - The Irish Times - Thu, Apr 22, 2010FORMER Fianna Fáil minister Frank Fahey has rejected an allegation that he assaulted another TD in a row over a report on a fishing vessel compensation scheme.
Using Oireachtas privilege, Fine Gael TD Tom Sheahan yesterday accused Mr Fahey of assaulting an unnamed Oireachtas member, and alleged he threatened TDs and Senators who spoke out on an Ombudsman’s report that was critical of a scheme he championed.
Mr Sheahan, a TD for Kerry South, made the comments at a meeting of the Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture and Fisheries yesterday. It was discussing Ombudsman Emily O’Reilly’s report on the Lost at Sea scheme.
“I can personally state that Mr Fahey not only abused but attacked and threatened members of this House regarding this scheme,” said Mr Sheahan.
“One of the members here was assaulted by Frank Fahey in this House. Members of the media were warned and threatened.”
Mr Fahey, one of the TDs stranded abroad by volcanic fog, could not attend the meeting. He later rejected Mr Sheahan’s comments as “yet another false allegation by Fine Gael over the Lost at Sea scheme”.
Acting committee chairman Bobby Aylward (Fianna Fáil) asked Mr Sheahan to withdraw the allegation, saying he was making a very serious charge. Mr Sheahan refused.
We have turned the corner.I commend this Budget to the House. Brian Lenihan, 9 December 2009
No, I'm not suggesting anything of the sort, what I'm clearing saying, is that there is a time and a place for these 'allegations'. Producing it when, for only the second time in its history that the Ombudsman is forced to ask the Oireachtas to intervene in a case, is not appropriate.
In this, FG show themselves no better than FF in putting personal politics ahead of statesmanship. Is political point scoring more important than justice and the role of the Ombudsman? In Tom Sheahan's case, apparently it is.

That's hiding behind the "Let's not make a political football out of this" line usually trotted out when someone gets caught out. No wonder it is a punchline in a Pat Shortt sketch.
By definition it is political. And if there is an allegation of a serious assault then it is for the papers to report it.
TBH I really can't see any benefit to anyone other than Frank Fahey to keep it quiet.
I think you well know that anything that causes embarrassment and difficulty for Frank Fahey will have my 100% approval, as evidenced by this thread and others.
However, knowing when to keep your mouth shut for the common good is an attribute that I'm only just learning.

Hang on. We all agree that Fahey is a failed politician, with numerous skeletons on his closet, and serious questions to answer. A lot of people on this website, in the media, and on various blogs are doing their damnedest to lowlight his 'achievements'.
Nonetheless, Sheahan's outburst yesterday is barnstorming on the biggest stage possible to promote these 'allegations'. Yesterday was nothing to with Fahey, it was about the Ombudsman getting a fair hearing, and the possibility of justice been done for the Byrne family.
The fact that you (plural) can't differentiate between the two is to put it mildly, intensely depressing.
