Yrs later a FG TD had told Tómas he had indeed literally been robbed on the day.

RIP Tómas, an absolute gentleman.

Sad news, he always came across as dignified and without a principled politician, a rarity in irish politics.

One of my earliest memories as a child going to Croke Park was of my father pointing out Tomas as he was selling copies of the United Irishman outside Gardiner Place and telling me he was one of the most honest Politicians there was - and my father was a Fianna Failer in those days.

Many years later on the first occasion I had as a City Councillor to vote for a Lord Mayor, the Civic Alliance candidate was Tomas. I said then and say now that it was an honour to vote for that man. He did do Ireland great service.

We became good friends and met often at events involving former Lord Mayors. To his great Comrade in life Mai my heartfelt sympathies.

May he rest in peace.

It was the greatest injustice heaped by the Zanu FF gombeen regime on this man and he refused to give in or unyield in his principals.

History will judge Liam Lawlor and Zanu FF poorly while the legacy of Tomas who fought many battles in his long, selfless and illustrious career on behalf of the working class will live on. A truly great man who Ireland will miss terribly. He is an inspiration to us all.

To mention Liam Lawlor in the same sentence as Tomas would be an insult to Tomas.

Yes indeed, he did this State some service indeed.

This is sad news. I met him in 69/70 and he was voice for the downtrodden. Ireland is poorer with his passing. RIP Tomás

The end of an era. Along with Sean Garland, he was the last major figure of his generation of republicans who moved away from nationalism towards socialism. The recent book on the Workers Party shows that he was disliked by many on the hard-left of the Workers Party (including Eoghan Harris) in the 70s and 80s for staying true to his republican ideals. He understood that being anti-Provo didnt automatically mean having to be anti-nationalist. If more within the WP had followed this line, they may have remained a larger force in Irish politics, particularly north of the border
