The story of our financial crisis has been of the dogs that didn’t bark.
Instead of all four insolvent institutions being investigated only Anglo is and that very slowly. Why? One year and three months after the inexplicable, reckless blanket bank guarantee the demand for an enquiry has to be lead by academic economists. Why? Shouldn’t the opposition, the media, the unions, ISME et al have been loudly demanding this for over a year? This is a full scale establishment cover up. The establishment were allowed to cover up previous large-scale wrongdoing in the banks.
Ultimate result: Massive damage to our economy. Now they (many opposition supporters among them) are covering everything up again. Shameful.
It won,t happen while the perpetrators are still in place, but an election is coming sooner than people think.

We have to make sure that the new bloods in the opposition get free reign over criminal investigations.

Then and only then can this country move forward.

That all sounds reasonable. My point is just that credit growth and interest rates are no longer under domestic control - a point another poster seemed confused about.

But your point is right. Our establishment, in the shape of the so-called Partnership process, steamed ahead with lots of cost inflating decisions. They were utterly detached from the reality of their country. Is it possible that they deluded themselves?

And so-called Partnership is not a Minister for Finance thing particularly. Isn't that process run out of the Taoiseach's office?

I don't disagree with any of that.
However, banks know they have a duty of care to their clients and I'm sure that this should prevent them lending irresponsibly.
