Irish Red Cross ask for donations for Irish flood disaster victims

I've made some donations to the Irish Red Cross, mainly to fund international activities I must say, and in a former life worked on a few campaigns for them. They've made an appeal today. I've made a donation, and I would encourage other users of P.ie to do the same if they can.

It surprised me a few years ago when flooding happened in Ringsend (I'd just moved out of the area) and the Irish Government had given money to the Irish Red Cross to distribute in the area. Whilst the 10m allocated to flood victims this week by the Government could be seen by many (including me) as paltry - the Irish Red Cross are seeking urgent assistance in helping those affected by the floods.

Over the last week widespread flooding throughout the country has caused thousands of people to lose their homes, livelihoods and vital services such as electricity and water supply. We urgently need your support to help those affected by this disaster.

Please donate now and help those in desperate need.

The Irish Red Cross are on the ground in the areas affected providing blankets, food and water and much needed transportation. Red Cross volunteers are also on standby to provide support to the HSE when required.

As we approach the Christmas period these people desperately need your financial help.

Please help us to provide emergency aid to those who have lost everything.

Please give whatever you can today.

(The Irish Red Cross are unfortunately unable to accept donations other than financial at this time)

    Thank you

    Irish Red Cross

This is a f*cking joke, right?

Its good that we can make our support through an organisation we know we can trust. This is completely separate from the support the govt must provide. People need help right now with lots of the small things.

I hope people give generously - this is no joke - I'm surprised it took so long for them to make an appeal

Is there any accurate assessment of the numbers badly affected by this?

Many thanks for this, had been wondering about where to go to try and help some bit. Would appreciate any suggestions from anyone about where to send some bed-clothes, childrens clothes etc? Was thinking of giving the SVP head office a ring tomorrow? The extent of the damage seems enormous. Simply devastating for people and so close to Christmas.
Realistically speaking, if the majority of humanity remain non-believers, it doesn't matter. No problem! The problem is that the majority of humanity have lost or ignore the deeper human values - compassion, a sense of responsibility. That is our big concern.

As a public sector worker, I believe next Thursdays stoppage could be used to better effect, if instead of picketing we spent the day on activities to fundraise for the flood victims.
