Remove union leaders from state boards

The so-called social partnership process involved stuffing state agencies and institutions with IBEC and union appointees whether they were qualified ot not.

e.g David Begg and the Central Bank

Imagine if IBEC were now threatening the government, withholding provision of the services unless they got there way etc.
There would be a public outcry that would almost certainly result in the removal of IBEC appointees from State Boards.

Why is this not happening in relation to the numerous union appointees on state boards given the behaviour of ICTU?

I would agree with you if all the blatant and crass appointments of political hacks were also revoked. State boards are stuffed with useless political detritus whose main function is to drain that board of money for zero return.

The unions should have no hand or part in running this country.

I will have huge respect for this failed government if they now face the unions down.

Having the Union leaders on state boards is clearly a conflict of interest. They should be given until the end of the year to resign, or all sacked without any pay-offs.
The Mahon Tribunal found Olivia Mitchell to have received an inappropriate payment from Frank Dunlop at the time of the 1992 Election. F.G. Gael has taken no action against her.

Do you think that Galway tent was empty while union leaders were in quango boards?

The conflict of interest issue is best highlighted by Bertie's admission that appointments to state boards were for " friends ". I remember one worker director of a state company telling me that he felt like he was attending a mini Ard Fheis ( FF of course ) when he attended meetings. At least he had to stand for election amongst his colleagues ( every 5 years ). All the others had to do was to keep well in with the party leadership.

I'd support taking a hatchet to the political appointments on state boards - it's wasteful and stifling in the public service. Wouldn't single out the union leaders though.

Why not just replace them with some honest Union reps who will really do the job ?
