This is obviously farcical, but let's not make the mistake of hero worshiping Abdullah, who started his 'career' as a member of the bloodthirsty Northern Alliance. Also, it's at least possible that he chose to withdraw because it seemed likely he would not win the election. Much better to paint himself as a hero for democracy than as a failed candidate.

Probably. After all, didn't Abdullah serve as "Foreign Minister" under Karzai a few years ago? I don't think the US or NATO engineered the vote rigging, because as you say both men would have been happy to do their bidding. I think it's just one more example of how NATO really are onlookers, rather than actors, in the Afghan debacle.Perhpas infighting for head puppet?
