    New Geo-political alliance

Interesting article from today's Asia Times regarding a major Arab-South American Summit in Brasilia.

    http://www.atimes.com/atimes/Middle_East/GE12Ak02.html

No wonder Washington hawks are uneasy. There's an emerging geopolitical axis on the map - Arab-South American. It's non-aligned. And it's swimming in oil. Between them, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Iraq, the United Arab Emirates, Algeria, Egypt, Qatar, Libya, Oman, Syria, Yemen, Venezuela, Ecuador, Argentina and Brazil pump about 27.2 million barrels of oil a day, about 32.5% of global production.
The US officially requested to be an observer at the summit. The Brazilians politely declined: "It's a public meeting, you can watch it on TV."
    Thoughts?

I hope it takes on the 1st world in the WTO...
I think US, UK, India, Australia and Eastern Europe will be the dominant geo-political alliance of 21st Century, all democracies that are strongly pro-democracy.

Get the flock out of here!!!

    ROTFL!!!

They were the dominant force in the 20th Century because they worked against democracy everywhere they could make some money.

    Were you not paying attention?

The above article shows that the people with the resources are now looking to work together to get fair prices for their goods, and to ensure that they aren't kicked around by the old powers in the 21st Century.

    Good for them!

"Fair prices" from OPEC?!? That's a good one.

An axis of greed if ever there was one, headed by the Saudi royal family: a criminal gang that makes the Bushes look like nuns.

Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Chile, Nicaragua, Haiti, and the ongoing efforts in Venezuela.

Oil costs between $1/bbl (Saudi Arabia) and $15/bbl (Siberia) to produce. After that it is the markets in London and New York who bid to buy supply contracts. It is hardly OPEC's fault that non-OPEC production is declining at a time when Chinese and Indian consumption is growing.

The day that US/UK start promoting deomcracies in countries where it won't benefit their financial interests, then I'll begin to take that line of spin seriously.

Georgia, Ukraine, Lebennon, Krgystan, I dont see I benefit there.

Do you think the Marshall plan was more for cynical financial return than aiding redevelopment and civil society?

Since it is becoming increasingly obvious the the Brazilian claim to represent South America is being shown up as rubbish by the Argentinians, and this is essentially a Lula ego trip, I cannot see much coming of it. Furthermore, that alliance cannot be seen as particularly good for democracy or human rights. Of those in attendance, how many can claim to have even remotely postive human rights records, or even intentions?

I cannot remember where I read it over the past week, but someone quoted de Gualle saying that Brazil had a great future and will always have one. I cannot see that changing.

You're the one using the word cynical.

Interesting, a new balance of power is needed throughout in my opinion. I still think the one to watch is China and perhaps India as it sucks up the manufacturing world.
