Govt denies ransom paid for Commins

    So who do you believe?

The newspaper said it was told by Musa Hilal, a former Arab militia leader who is now special adviser to Sudanese President Omar al-Beshir, that this denial 'is just politicians' talk'.
That's the trouble with lies. You don't know what to believe any more! Mind you it's hard to believe a FF with their tack record of fibs and broken promises. It's good that the girls were released but having said that I would suggest that the kidnappers were not boy scouts. Are we to believe that they just let the girls walk off like that?

    I crave some honesty!

    More in this piece too

Sudan denies ransom paid for hostages - Times Online

In that Sunday Times piece the guy quoted in the Irish Times article as claiming a ransom was paid, now says he doesn't know whether or not one was paid.

It is worth noting that there are still Irish humanitarian workers working in Darfur, as well as humanitarian workers from many other countries. Whether or not a ransom was paid, reports that one was paid could put humanitarian workers in greater danger (both in Darfur and elsewhere). A French worker with ICRC was kidnapped in West Darfur last week.

How would you feel about it if you were working as a humanitarian worker in rural Darfur right now?

What in the name of god are they doing out there? Why cant we sort out our own problems? Send the girls to some of the poorer parts of Dublin for a few weeks. That would stop the nonsense of ransoms and government jets.

I don't even know what it is like in Darfur so your question is lost on me. Regardless of the situation in Darfur or elsewhere there is no excuse for lies and mistruths. Who was it who said that you need ten lies to cover one?

Besides these boy scout kidnapper types are not idiots, in fact they are more clever that you might think! They will continue, despite any lies on ransoms, to do their commerce; such is life. Do you really think that these guys will go away if we say nothing?

I think its pretty obvious that if there is a perception that ransom is paid for kidnapped humanitarian workers (whether its true or not) then there will be more such kidnappings. It is quite clear from the escalation of piracy around the Horn of Africa, where companies openly admitted paying ransoms for their ships, crew and cargo, that there has been an escalation of this activity.

You say that such kidnappings will continue, but they are a recent phenomenon in Darfur, and they don't take place in many areas of the world where humanitarian workers work where there are also desperate poor armed people. So it is not inevitable that they will continue.

Truth is a great abstract concept, but its not a universal positive in all circumstances. Not only are aid workers under threat from such kidnappings but millions of the most vulnerable people in the world who depend on humanitarian assistance are also threatened by such incidences which reduce or cut off the international aid that they depend on.

In any case, if the Irish government are telling the truth about this particular incident, I don't know what more you can ask of them to prove that they are honest in their reports of this incident.
