    Question on Fine Gael policy

Could some Fine Gaeler settle an argument?

A Fine Gael MEP recently proposed that Child Benefit should be witheld, in whole or in part, from the parents of children who receive anti-social behaviour orders.

I think this was a Fine Gael MEP giving his personal opinion and that it is not party policy. Another chap says that it is Fine Gael party policy.

Whether you agree or not with the policy, is it actually Fine Gael's position?

it was jim higgins and of course he was lambasted for suggesting it.
i bet you'd see an improvement in anti-social behaviour if it was implemented.
i think it was just his opinion and not party policy

I am 99% sure that it was just Jim Higgins a Fine Gael MEP giving his personal opinion. I have never seen anyone else in the party say anything about this or any other evidence whatsoever to make me believe its party policy. Also Jim Higgins isn't our spokesperson for Justice and if it was policy either O'Keefe or Kenny would have announced it. It’s also not included in the part on Anti-social behavior in the policy briefing, which was updated recently.

So yeah I think it’s safe to say your right and it's not policy.

    I think it's a good idea though.

No, its an awful idea. Higgins should have a bit more cop-on than this. Its highly unlikely that taxing parents is going to reduce underage anti-social disorder. They probably come from homes that are within the poverty line anyway.
