There's been much speculation over why John O'Donoghue is waiting a week before resigning. The touted reason is to put his affairs in order, but speculation of course is that should the Green Party choose to pull out from government this weekend, thus forcing a dissolution before he resigns, he'll be able to be automatically elected.
Should such a sequence of events unfold, it strikes me that President McAleese could hold out until JOD's resignation is effective, ensuring all seats are contested. That would be quite shrewd, and entirely within her discretion.
