rowing concern has emerged this week that a multi-million euro project to improve facilities at Nenagh Hospital and provide a day care centre in Borrisokane are likely to be postponed by the Government due to the worsening economic situation.
Deputy Coonan pointed out that the funding for the improvement in facilities in the hospital and for the day care centre in Borrisokane formed the central part of a deal which the Independent TD Michael Lowry had hammered out with the former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern in return for his support for the current Government following the 2007 general election.
Contacted by The Guardian, Michael Lowry conceded that he was concerned about the impact the current economic crisis would have in relation to the delivery of the Government’s pledges in relation to Borrisokane and Nenagh hospital.
“However, I have restated to the Taoiseach and the Minister for Health my absolute support for these projects. I met with Mary Harney last Wednesday and she gave me a commitment that these projects would be considered in the context of her budget for the current year. She did confirm that she is anxious to facilitate my requests as far as possible and she is very conscious of the commitments given to me.”
