    McDowell gets an extra 1,000 Gardai

    Heard it on Today.fm news just there that McDowell has secured funding for an additional 1000 Gardai on top of the new Gardai already beginning their training. This will bring total Garda #'s in the country to 15,000.

    Great news. It will make a differance. Sad to say they are needed but that seems to be the way our society is going. Without the uniforms on the streets, criminals run the show.

    It's a step in the right direction, but this idea that a few more Gardaí will solve all our problems is rubbish. It's impossible for Gadraí to be everywhere at once and the problems are a lot deeper then that. Hopefully some of these will also go into increasing the number of gardai in the organized crime and drug units which are in dire need of more men right now.

    Copy of the statement from McD HERE

    The Main Points are as follows

    o A further increase of 1,000 in the strength of An Garda Síochána to bring the total to 15,000 over the next three years;

    o Sanction for 300 additional civilian administrative support posts for An Garda Síochána;

    o The recruitment of the 7 senior civilian posts recommended in the recent reports from Kathleen O'Toole and Maurice Hayes;

    o An increase in the retirement age for Gardaí, Sergeants and Inspectors from 57 to 60;

    o A proportionate increase in the targeted strength of the Garda Reserve from 900 to 1500;

    o Increased staffing for the Forensic Science Laboratory, the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions and the Courts Service;

    o No limit on funds available for the Witness Protection Programme.

    Remember this is the same Minister who regularly launches different proposals, but then never go any further then the press release and the launch so I wouldn't start praising him yet.
