Fine Gael is due to table a private members' bill in the Dail this evening aimed at eliminating political cronyism in appointments to state boards.
The party says all appointees to such boards should be vetted by all-party Oireachtas committees to ensure they are earning the position on merit.
At the moment, jobs on state boards are often given to supporters of the government parties as rewards for their loyalty.
Under Fine Gael's plan, the qualifications of prospective candidates would have to be published and all appointees would receive a letter detailing their responsibilities.
FG bill aims to reform appointments to state boards - Politics, National News - Independent.ie
All political parties have been guilty of cronyism over the years. Therefore, the FG bill is a welcome opportunity to end it for once and all. In addition, I am pleased to see that the Oireachtas will be the vehicle for vetting potential appointees rather than some newly founded quango. Represenative democracy in action.
