    Slave Ship docks in Dublin

Report in today's Irish Times says that the 22 staff on a ship that has docked in Dublin port are claiming that they are only paid two euros a hour and are owed back pay going back months also that some of them claiming they are virtual prisoners on this ship.

Most of the crew are from Eastern Europe.

How can this disgraceful conduct be tolerated in Ireland 2006?

Hopefully this will result in legal action against those responsible.

Confirms the race to the bottom and 2-tier workforce. Restrictions are needed to prevent this escalating into the future. What is also needed are for the labour-inspectorate to be significantly increased faster than planned, and for the govt to press the Commission to introduce a new Ferries Directive to stamp out this sort of jiggery-pokery.

You're one man to talk about this, considering your support of all things privatisation.

remember Irish ferries? well paid jobs replaced by immigrant labour purchased at the minimal subsistance cost to the company? Highly skilled and experienced sailors replaced by a transient over worked labour force who didn't even have the basic skills required to safely operate the ships they were crewing.

You have no moral authority to complain about the consequences of the free market you wish to impose on everyone without question or limit
Actual morality is doing what is right regardless of what you're told. Religious morality is doing what you're told, regardless of if it's right.

Surely this implies that the "free market" does not exist in Ireland. If it did, employers would not resort to such tactics as reported.

I support the free-market except in movement of labour I am a liberal not a libertarian.

so did you support Irish ferries, or did you support the workers when they had their dispute last year?

The workers. Liberals are not indifferent to social-justice, but we believe the strike weapon should be a last resort - which it clearly was in this case.

You should ask yourself why you support the current FF/PD government.
