Southern Protestants & the Orange Order

Just out of interest, what are other Southern Protestants view of the Orange Order? Why does it not interest you? What don't you like about it? Do you think it has a place in southern Protestant identity in the 21st Century?

Seriously, just directing this question at Protestants (not non-RC RC's, or ex-RC's), to gage an opinion. I know what the usual suspects already think on the subject

I know several southern Protestants in Cork, and none of them has expressed
any opinion-pro or con-on the OO.

BTW, I'm an agnostic from a Roman Catholic family.

I know quite a few Protestants in the Republic, and to a man / woman, they just don't get this Orange Order thing at all. One or two also expressed the opinion years ago that Paisleyites are an embarrassment to Protestantism.

What racing driver Eddie Irvine said about northern protestant politicians - " they're an embarrassment ; and I'm not easily embarrassed " generally holds true. Speaking as a northern prod(ish) now happily ensconsed in the Republic I always found the once -a - year mingling of norn irons upper and middle classes ( relative terms, I know ) with horny handed sons of the soil hypocritical in the extreme and thankfully I can now forget about the whole kit and kaboodle.
The idea of the OO reresenting "Britishness " is laughable. They're a nasty manifestation of irish evangelical protestantism which bewilders the vast majority of British people.
One of my favourite quotes was from a squaddie who was asked if he would shoot Protestants, to which he replied:- " just as long as they're Irish, sir "
The only way the OO could have a proper place in Irish society would be if it morphed into a society for the promotion and celebration of protestantism alone, and jettisoned the " His/Her Majesty " baggage.

I went with a Protestant from Gorey. She had the audacity to try and cross the street while an OO parade was some distance away. She was man-handled, in that particularly charming manner than OO folk have, off 'the Queen's highway' and her southern accent earned her a few ungentlemanly kicks up the hole for her trouble.

Suffice to say her opinions on the loyal Orders would be unprintable.
We are all born mad. Some remain so.

I think nobody has a problem with any religous organisation as long as politics is kept out of it and nationality be it Catholic,Protestant od whatever. Everyone likes a parade.

In my experience, most protestants in the Republic have pretty much the same attitude to the Orange Order that most people outside of Northern Ireland have - i.e. a general sense of shock and revulsion at their behaviour and absolutely no idea what they're all about.

It's a bit like asking a random white person in New York how they feel about the KKK.

Being protestant doesn't automatically make someone have any particular fondness for the Orange Order!

Why are you singling out Cork and Kerry Protestants?
