    Fat stars make obesity normal

BBC NEWS | Health | Fat stars 'make obesity normal'

Is this type of thing a symptom of a nanny state or a correct and fair concern?

My view is that being obese is good for nothing so no harm in trying to prevent it.
Although the amount of time spent on internet fora might be impacted if half of ye went for a walk.

Bit of both really. Obesity is a huge issue (sorry) and needs to be tackled somehow, but I'm not sure that censoring television into an idealised fantasy world is quite the way to go about it.

But sure we'll go ahead and put the cart before the horse anyway...cos that's the way it's always been done...

Mary harney, John O Donoghue and Dan Boyle to name but a few!
We dont have to turn to the world of television to find examples of obesity.

    No doubt.
We are getting fatter because carbs, sugar and fat are cheap and bulky.
And we are eating lots of all of those because we don't cook very much anymore.
There's got to be enough skinny people on the telly already to far out-weigh (literally) the obese ones anyway.

Yeah. You wouldn't mind a politician being fat...it's when that politician claims to be the country's expert on health that eyebrows start to be raised.

I was watching that 30 Rock programme last night. One of the female stars who plays an actress put on weight and Alec Baldwin's character quipped that

"She better lose 30 lbs...or gain 90, she can't go on television looking like that".

    Made me laugh.

Baldwin is brilliant in that show. Kind of like his character in The Departed.

I'm afraid the problem is much bigger. Fat stars and other prominent examples of excess avoirdupois like Mary Horney are only some of a myriad of streams contributing to the tsunami of flab that is engulfing much of the world.

The solution, if there is one at all, can only lie in education and devoting as many resources as possible to encouraging healthy dietary habits and regular exercise.

George Carlin paints a good picture of the horror that obesity has become.

I know. He pretty much carries the whole thing as far as I'm concerned.

It's certainly fair to be concerned with the body images presented on television, but I do think the learned doctor is spouting nonsense.

Overweight people are rarely portrayed as any kind of 'role model' on television - on balance, I would say it's quite the reverse.
